Greenville College Announces 2004 Commencement Weekend Schedule

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Greenville College will conduct its 112 th commencement exercises with ceremonies and festivities on Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23.

The weekend begins Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. with the traditional Ivy Cutting ceremony on the front lawn of Hogue Hall. Graduating seniors stand in a circle connected by a continuous strand of ivy. In a solemn ceremony where no words are spoken, the college president, Dr. V. James Mannoia, Jr. will move around the circle, cutting the ivy between each senior to symbolize the parting of ways.

The Ivy Cutting luncheon will follow the ceremony at noon in the Armington Center.

The adult and graduate studies commencement will be held at the Crum Recreation Center at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Dave Holden, dean of adult and graduate studies, and Dr. Joe Culumber, assistant professor of religion and director of the Leadership and Ministry Program (LAMP), will present "Doors of Opportunity and Service," a commencement address chronicling the service of Joe Phoenix, a GOAL and LAMP student currently stationed in Iraq.

The traditional choir concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Free Methodist Church. Following the concert, the Baccalaureate service will occur at 7:30 p.m. in the Crum Recreation Center. The keynote speaker will be Dr. George Barber, head men's basketball coach and assistant professor of health, physical education, and recreation at Greenville College.

Commencement ceremonies for traditional graduates will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Crum Recreation Center. The speaker for the Commencement address will be Dr. Dallas Willard, professor of philosophy at the University of Southern California. Willard studied at the undergraduate level at William Jewell College Tennessee Temple University, and Baylor University. He pursued graduate studies at Baylor and the University of Wisconsin. He earned a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin with a major in philosophy and minor in the history of science.
