Tom Ackerman Named SLIAC Volleyball Coach of the Year
Former Greenville Resident Led Lady Panthers to Best Record in
Ten Years
GREENVILLE, ILL. - Throughout the recently completed volleyball
season, the Greenville College Lady Panthers ascended into the upper
echelon of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
With an overall record of 14-11 (8-6 SLIAC), volleyball coaches
throughout the SLIAC noted G.C.'s improvement by voting head coach
Tom Ackerman as the conference coach of the year.
In his first season as head coach, the former Greenville resident
directed the Lady Panthers to a third place finish in the SLIAC
for their highest conference finish since Greenville joined the
SLIAC in 1995. Ackerman had been the assistant coach for the Lady
Panther program over the previous five years and succeeded Rick
McPeak following the 2001 season.
Ackerman's playing and coaching background spans a number of years.
During his freshman year of college, he started the men's club volleyball
team at G.C., and they were conference champions by his senior year.
Currently, he coaches a 16-year-old boys' team who was ranked number
one in St. Louis last season and fourth in the nation at one point.
He also competes in open level volleyball in St. Louis, and his
team was the number one "A" team in the nation last year.
"I am very thankful for all the great opportunities God has
given me through the sport of volleyball," Ackerman said.
Now residing in St. Louis with his wife Carrie, Tom is the program
director and part owner of the Little Gym in Ballwin, Mo. He has
a bachelor's degree in recreation from Greenville College and has
completed coursework towards a master's degree at Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville.
