Catalyst Fund
During its 110-year history, the science programs at GC have made
a significant contribution to the world in the form of scores of
future scientists, doctors, engineers, teachers, etc. These persons
have literally spanned the globe and contributed to national and
international efforts.
Training in science is not inexpensive, especially if it is done
properly. This means actual functioning equipment in the lab that
encounter difficulties rather than solely computer simulations.
To supplement the budgets in the science departments so that more
expensive items can be purchased, the Catalyst Fund was created.
Since its creation in 1999, over $155,000 has been raised toward the
purchase of three major items for new instruments/capital equipment.
| Varian Gas Chrom / Mass Spectrometer |
$50,000 |
| Zeiss Acustar Microscopes |
$49,000 |
| Faculty-Built Observatory |
$20,000 |
Now that these larger items are in place, there is a real sense
of excitement by both students and faculty for what can be achieved
by the use of each. There is just no substitute for looking through
a quality microscope or a quality telescope! The students are the
benefactors in all of those but many former students have reached
out to help provide the funding and become an agent of change, a
catalyst.
Currently, funds are being accumulated for a 50-50 match on a $72,000 proposal to
NSF for an upgrade of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer.
