Buying a Computer for College Print E-mail
Written by Dan Wolfe

We highly recommend that every incoming student seriously consider enrolling in the Greenville College Laptop Program. Through this program you will receive a high-quality laptop with an educational discount, up to 4 years warranty, accidental damage insurance for the Dell systems, and on-campus support to take care of any problem you run into with your Laptop Program computer. If you decide not to go with the Laptop Program, you are welcome to purchase any system you'd like from any manufacturer. However, we can not provide any technical support to you should you run into problems. If you purchase a system outside the Laptop Program there are computer repair stores in Greenville, or you can get support through your computer's manufacturer.

We have also put together a comparison sheet that has the Dell Laptop Program configurations included. Please print out the laptop_info.pdf and use it as a tool when you shop around for a new computer.  We will be posting a configuration sheet for the Apple notebooks as soon as they are available.

The following are provided as minimum recommendations if you decide not to be a part of the Greenville College Dell University program. Again, we highly encourage you to consider the Greenville College Laptop Program, as we feel it is the best overall value.

Operating System: Windows XP  or Vista
Processor: 2.0 Ghz Pentium Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Pentium 4, Pentium D, or Athlon 64
RAM: 1 Gb
Hard Drive: 120 Gb

Wireless Internet Adapter: Linksys 802.11b/g USB Wireless Adapter
Other Software:

Laptop:

Operating System: Windows XP or Vista
Processor: 2.0 Ghz Pentium Core 2 Duo, Core Duo, Pentium 4, or Pentium M
RAM: 1 Gb
Hard Drive: 60 Gb
CD Drive: CD-RW
Wireless Internet Adapter: Internal 802.11b/g wireless adapter***
Other Software:

Office 2007 Student  Edition, Antivirus Software**

**While Greenville College offers free antivirus software to all current students, you should have an up-to-date antivirus program running before you get to campus. If you do not have antivirus running on your system, you could become infected with a virus. This could give you problems getting on the network once you get to campus, and if we notice virus activity from your computer your network access will be disabled until we verify that the computer is virus-free. If you do not have antivirus currently, the Help Desk recommends free AVG antivirus, found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

***We have found that on some laptops the internal wireless cards are not compatible with our network. If you purchase a laptop outside of the Greenville College Dell university program we cannot guarantee it will work on our network. If this is the case, you will have to purchase a PCMCIA wireless card. We recommend the Linksys 802.11b/g PCMCIA card if this is the case.
