Written by Rick Murphy

Greenville College has recently partnered with Google to provide Gmail accounts for our student email solution.  This decision was reached after much discussion and research, and in collaboration with the Alumni Office.

We are excited about this change.  Utilizing Gmail provides some great advantages to our students:

  • More storage capacity- email account will increase almost 70x in capacity and allow students to backup class documents.
  • Lifetime accounts-students will be able to maintain email accounts after graduation.
  • Better spam filtering.
  • Utilization of Google's other applications- students can take advantage of "Docs & Spreadsheets", chat, and personal calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recognize you may have some questions about this change and have tried to answer anticipated ones below:

What format will student email addresses be in?  They will be in the format of StudentID#@panthers.greenville.edu.  This format is necessary in order to maintain "email for life".  Students can set up "nicknames" for their email account that must be approved by school administrators.  Students have been provided instructions by email, internet, and mail on how to access their account and utilize them.

Will I still be able to look up addresses in Outlook?  You will still be able to look up email addresses in the Global Address book according to name.

Will I be able to look up students using the "Student Directory" on PantherNet?  Yes, this utility will still exist.

Will I be able to still send email to the DStudent list in the Outlook Global Address Book?  Yes, and we will continually update this list to contain only current students.
