1: What is the location of the blackboard server?
http://blackboard.greenville.edu
2: I can't login to blackboard? What is my username and password?
Username: FirstInitialLastName (i.e. JPublic)
Password: Provided at start of employment
If you cannot login into the system after trying your initial username/password, Please contact the helpdesk with your information, and an account can be set up for you.
3: When will Blackboard courses for next semester be created, and when will students be enrolled?
The typical schedule for uploading the next term's classes is as follows:
- For the Fall 2008 semester, the process will be run on Tuesday, August 12, and on the first day of classes.
- For Interterm, the process will be run at the beginning of December, the week before Christmas break, and on the first day of classes.
- For the Spring semester, the process will be run the week before Christmas Break, the first Monday after the start of Interterm classes, and again on the first day of classes for the Spring semester.
To reduce the number of incorrect enrollments due to schedule changes, the process to automatically enroll students in their classes will be run three times: one week before the first day of classes, on the first day of classes, and one week after the first day of classes.
Please note that this schedule is subject to change as necessary at any time without prior notification. The Helpdesk will endeavor to keep this schedule updated as it changes.
4: I am teaching a class but it is not there.
Some courses are listed as "Open Titled" at the time they are imported into Blackboard from the Jenzabar database. Look on the "Courses" tab to see if there is a course with a title of "Open Titled" and check to see if it has the correct course number. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + F on the Courses tab and search for the course number. (e.g. ENG101.01.SP2006, ENG101.01, etc.)
If it still does not appear, contact the IT Helpdesk and the class will be created for you.
5: Some Students are not enrolled in my course who should be.
Students can look up the class in the Blackboard Course Catalog and Self-Enroll.
Alternatively, you can enroll the student yourself. To do so:
- Enter your class and click on the Control Panel link on the left-hand menu.
- Click on the "Enroll User" link in the top-right box (User Management).
- Select to find the student by either their Last Name or Username. Their Username is their Student ID number, and is the more reliable method of finding the student. In the past, some students have been created with their first and last names reversed, which can cause difficulties is searching by Last Name.
- Enter the search terms and click the "Search" button.
- Place a checkmark in the box in the "Add" column next to the student you wish to enroll.
- Click the "Submit" button. You will receive a confirmation of enrollment.
6: Can I remove a Student from my class?
Yes, but it is important to note that once a student has been removed from the course, any grades or Digital Dropbox items they have had up to that point are lost and cannot be recovered. To remove a student from the course:
- Enter your class and click on the Control Panel link on the left-hand menu.
- Click on the "Remove Users from the Course" link in the top-right box (User Management).
- Select to find the student by either their Last Name or Username.
- Enter the search terms and click the "Search" button.
- Place a checkmark in the box in the "Remove" column next to the student you wish to remove.
- Type "Yes" (without the quotes) in the input box above the "Submit" button to confirm the removal.
- Click the "Submit" button. You will receive a confirmation of enrollment.
7: Can I remove my old classes from Blackboard?
No. In order to have courses removed from your "My Courses" section, contact the HelpDesk with a list of the specific Course ID you would like removed (ex. CIS105.01.SP2006, SPN101.01.FA06, etc.). A Work Order will be created and we will remove the courses for you.
8: I want my course to remain available to me, but I don't want it to show up in the "My Courses" list.
It is possible to "hide" some Blackboard courses from the "My Courses" list on the "My Institution" page. Hidden courses will still appear on the "Courses" page. To Hide Blackboard Courses:
- The course must be available. Only “available” courses will show on the “Customize My Courses” page.
- On the “My Institution” page, click the “Edit” button (looks like a pencil) in the top right corner of the My Courses box.
- Deselect the “Show Course” and “Show Announcements” checkboxes for the classes you wish to “hide”.
- Be sure to make the course “unavailable” again so it doesn’t show up for all students as well.
9: I have a class that is cross-listed, and would like to only have one Blackboard course. How do I do this?
To have only one course for cross-listed classes, you will need to be sure to have all the students from both classes enrolled in one of the two Blackboard courses. It does not matter which, just be sure to remember which you have chosen. For help on enrolling students, please see the question "Some Students are not enrolled in my course who should be."
Once all the students have been enrolled in one class, you can request the Helpdesk to remove the other class. Be sure to provide an explanation as to why you are requesting to remove a class from the current semester, or it will not be removed because of policy restrictions.
Many instructors have chosen to re-title the Blackboard course to indicate its cross-listed status, i.e. "COM/MP 410 Seminar". This will help with any confusion a Media Promotions major might have in suddenly being enrolled in a Communications course that they did not sign up for.
10: Students cannot self-enroll in my class, how do I change that?
- Enter your class and click on the control panel button.
- Click on Course Settings
- Click on Enrollment Options
- Click on the Self Enrollment Option
You may also set a password to enroll in the course with the Require Access code to enroll setting.
11: My course says it's unavailable. How do I make it available to students?
- Click on the course that says it is unavailable from the "My Courses" section on the right side of the page.
- Click on the "Control Panel" link on the right side of the page under your course links.
- Click on "Settings" under the "Course Options" menu.
- Click on "Course Availability"
- Change "Make Course Available:" to Yes
- Click on the "Submit" button
